Federal agencies and commissions
There are hundreds of federal agencies and commissions charged with handling such responsibilities as managing America's space program, protecting its forests, and gathering intelligence. Some federal agencies are under the purview of a government department, while others are independent.
Examples of well known federal agencies include:
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (independent)
- Social Security Administration (SSA) (independent)
- Federal Drug Administration (FDA) (Department of Health & Human Services)
- Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) (Department of Commerce)

Many agencies have digitized a number of their documents and make them available from their web sites. Examples of these databases are:
