Call Numbers
Call numbers are the combination of letters and numbers that appear on the spines of books in the library. Like most U.S. academic libraries, the UMass Amherst Libraries uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system of subject headings, each of which has a unique call number range. Journalism is a subset of Language and Literature (P) and is in the subclass range PN 4699-5650. The PN range is located on the 8th floor of the library. Within the PN range it breaks down like this:
Library of Congress Call # | Subjects |
---|---|
PN 4699-5650 | Journalism. The periodical press, etc. |
PN 4735-4748 | Relation to the state. Government and the press. Liberty of the press. |
PN 4775-4784 | Technique. Practical journalism |
PN 4825-4830 | Amateur journalism |
PN 4832-4836 | Magazines and other periodicals |
PN 4840-5648 | By region or country |
PN 5650 | The Jewish press |
