Database Search Tips
Boolean operators
Use OR to retrieve results with either of your search terms
Use AND to retrieve results with both of your search terms
Use NOT to exclude results that contain the search terms that come after NOT
Use parentheses to group search terms together and indicate the order of operations, eg. (process OR operation) AND (improvement OR optimization)
Phrase searching
Use quotation marks to search for exact phrases, eg. "thermal expansion"
Search fields
Keyword searches are most successful in the Title, Abstract, and/or Keywords fields
Find articles & research papers
Articles often contain new data/information (primary articles) or summarize the current state of the field (review articles). They are typically written for expert audiences and assume a certain degree of technical expertise. The databases that index these articles can vary in terms of their specificity. See below for some examples of databases relevant for Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
General Science
These databases will contain articles spanning a broad range of scientific fields.
-
Web of Science This link opens in a new windowIndex to articles from peer-reviewed journals in all disciplines.Search by cited reference, topic, author, and more. Arts and Humanities covers 1975-present; Social Sciences 1900-present; and Science 1900-present.Available on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
-
Scitation This link opens in a new windowThe leading journals and conference proceedings from the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Publishing. Topics include: Acoustics; Astronomy/astrophysics; Atomic/molecular physics; Biological physics; Energy; Geophysics; Materials science; Mathematical physics; Nanotechnology; Nuclear physics; optical physics; Particle physics; Physical chemistry; Plasma physics; Quantum mechanics; Rheology and fluid dynamics; Statistical physics.Available on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
-
Scopus This link opens in a new windowScopus is an indexing and abstracting database of peer-reviewed scholarly content covering the sciences, social sciences, and arts & humanities, comparable to the Web of Science. Scopus allows for the discovery, tracking, and analysis of scholarship that includes: journal articles, conference proceedings, trade magazines, book series, books and book chapters, and patents.
Use Scopus to:
• Search for documents by topic, title, author, or institutional affiliation
• Perform citation searches and establish citation alerts
• Export citations to reference management systems
• View impact metrics for authors and journals
• Integrate Scopus content with ORCID profilesAvailable on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
These databases will focus in more specifically on mechanical/industrial engineering fields.
-
Engineering Village This link opens in a new windowComprehensive access to engineering journal articles, conference papers, and web sites, 1884-present.Available on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
-
PubMed This link opens in a new windowNational Library of Medicine's comprehensive database of citations to medical journal articles, with links to UMass-subscribed full text, 1946-present. PubMed includes all MEDLINE content, plus content from additional journals and books in the life sciences.Available on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.

SAE MobilusSociety of Automotive Engineers publications UMass Amherst Libraries provides access to:
- SAE Digital Library Historical Standards GV (SAE Historical Ground Vehicle Standards 1927 - present)
- STAPP Car Crash Conference Technical Papers (1966- 2017)
- SAE e-Journals
- AEI Digital Library (Automotive Engineering International magazine) -
Transportation Research International Documentation (TRID)Combines the records from the Transportation Research Board's Transportation Research Information Services and the OECD's Joint Transport Research Centre's International Transport Research Documentation databases. TRID provides access to more than 1.2 million records of worldwide transportation research
Finding Full Text
Citation databases do not always provide access to the full text of the articles they index. Try these steps to locate full text:
- Look for links (HTML, PDF) or click
to see full text options - Check that the Libraries subscribe to the journal by searching the Publication Finder for the journal title
- Request an electronic copy of an article unavailable online through UMass via Interlibrary Loan
Open Access Preprints and Publications
Preprints are a form of academic journal article that have NOT yet been peer-reviewed. Preprints are often used to get new ideas/data out into the academic world more rapidly. As such, they can be useful in highlighting potential burgeoning areas of research. However, it is important to note that the final article may undergo some revision after peer-review (assuming it is to be formally published in a traditional journal).
-
arXivarXiv is a preprint database that covers a variety of mathematical and engineering fields, including electrical/computer engineering.
-
engrXivengrXiv is a preprint database covering all fields of engineering.
-
techRxivtechRxiv (IEEE) is a preprint database focused on computer engineering and related technology.
-
medRxivmedRxiv is a preprint database covering all areas of the health sciences (including health systems and quality improvement).
