Accelerating Public Access to Research Data

The AAU-APLU released its Guide to Accelerate Public Access to Research Data in April of 2021. UMass Amherst, one of the 30 original organizations affiliated with this effort, has created a Research Data Management Strategic Plan in response to this guidance.

This website will document:

  • A summary of the guidance from the AAU-APLU
  • UMass Amherst's Research Data Management Strategic Plan
  • How the Research Data Management Strategic Plan aligns with the AAU-APLU's Guidance
  • Progress related to the Research Data Management Strategic Plan

You can read more about the history of the AAU-APLU's initiative on Public Access to Research Data. CHORUS has also provided an overview.

Summary of Guidance

APARD is broken down into four sections:

  • Framing a Campus Initiative to Accelerate Public Access to Research Data - introducing the benefits and challenges, including culture change.
  • Making Priorities Visible and Establishing a Plan - making visible that data sharing & stewardship is a campus priority, establishing governance and responsibility for data stewardship, establishing a coordinating committee to ensure success, and developing a strategic goal and implementation plan.
  • Key Implementation Areas to Consider - updating research data policy, identify campus experts in research data management, allocate funds to address areas of need, provide education for good data stewardship practice, and facilitate culture change.
  • Essential Questions - a list of 17 questions to ask of your campus and leadership to help support research data policies, sharing, and stewardship.
