Literature Reviews, Systematic Reviews & More for Health Sciences
Introduction
Finding a journal to publish in can be challenging. There are some tools that can help, but the ones I know about do not have ways to limit by the type of submission (qualitative research, case studies, reviews, etc.).
A good way to start is to search a database or two for articles on your topic and look at the journals publishing them. You can also check the journals from your references.
Free Tools
These tools are freely available - they do not require a UMass Amherst login to access them.
- Jane (Journal/Author Name Estimator)"Have you recently written a paper, but you're not sure to which journal you should submit it? Or maybe you want to find relevant articles to cite in your paper? Or are you an editor, and do you need to find reviewers for a particular paper? Jane can help!
Just enter the title and/or abstract of the paper in the box, and click on 'Find journals', 'Find authors' or 'Find Articles'. Jane will then compare your document to millions of documents in PubMed to find the best matching journals, authors or articles."
Subscription-Based Tools
UMass Amherst Libraries pays for subscriptions to these tools, so an active UMass NetID and password is required to access them.
- Journal Citation Reports This link opens in a new windowJCR has a relatively new "Match my manuscript" tool. It is similar to Jane (the free tool), but uses Web of Science data instead of PubMed to suggest matches. Requires you to create a Web of Science account to access.Available on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
- Ulrich's Web This link opens in a new windowYou can search for you topic, then use the limiters apply filters like Active status and Subject areaAvailable on campus to all, or off-campus to UMass Amherst students, staff and faculty with an UMass Amherst IT NetID (user name) and password.
Publishing Open Access
If you are interested in publishing in an Open Access journal, check out the list of UMass Amherst Open Access Agreements and Advocacy to see what publishers and journals offer reduced or waived Author Processing Charges (APCs).
For fully open access publications that require an APC, the UMass Amherst Libraries SOAR Fund (Supporting Open Access Research) may be able to help.
- DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals This link opens in a new windowThousands of open access scholarly journals, most published by academic departments of universities worldwide. Coverage varies; mostly recent.Content is freely available for use by all.
