Using NTRS, STAR, and the OPAC to access NASA reports at the Science and Engineering Library.

For documents issued in 1995 and before use Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR): STAR Personal Author or Contract Number Annual Index will display the NASA Accession Number to the lower right of the STAR citation in the format: NYear-Number (e.g. N75-17011). The fiche are filed by the NASA Accession Number which is located in the top left corner of the fiche. Most fiche published in 1995 and earlier are filed in the cabinet labeled NASA1, the remainder are in the top drawers of NASA2.

For documents issued in 1996 and after use the On-Line Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Search for the report in the library catalog to obtain Series and NASA Report Number, although some may still have an Accession Number. The Report Number is formatted: NASA-[Series]-[Year or not]-Report Number (e.g. NASA/CR-1998-207761). The Report Number is presented in the Series Statement in the Full View screen of the OPAC or the NTRS abstract. Use this number to search the fiche. The Report Number will be in parentheses near the top left, in the body of the description of the fiche or written out on its envelope. The number on the envelope takes precedence in searching. The year, if present, may appear as 2 or 4 digits. If necessary search with and without year. 1996- fiche are filed in the cabinet labeled NASA2.

For STAR 2003-2004: Access to STAR for the years 2003-2004 is available on-line by a title search in the OPAC. Older issues back to 1996 are available from NASA via .pdf files by contacting NASA STI HELP DESK.
