- Japanese Historical Maps from the UC Berkeley CollectionThe Japanese Historical Map Collection contains about 2,300 early maps of Japan and the World, and sugoroku games as well.
- Virtual Kyoto 3D MapRequires special software, but you can look and compare street views and overhead images of Kyoto in the 12 century and present day.

- Nichibunken (International Research Center for Japanese Studies)Most of the databases require registration (free), which you can renew automatically annually. There are photograph collections, map collections, and some amazing scrolls.
- Meiji and Taisho Era Photographs (National Diet Library)English language exhibition of photographs taken during 1868-1912.
- Mainichi PhotobankJapanese only. Mainichi newspaper's photography archive. Searchable. You can purchase rights to use for publication or websites.
