Japanese history through visual images. Website created by one of the leading American scholars on modern Japan.

Japanese Historical Maps from the UC Berkeley Collection
The Japanese Historical Map Collection contains about 2,300 early maps of Japan and the World, and sugoroku games as well.
Virtual Kyoto 3D Map
Requires special software, but you can look and compare street views and overhead images of Kyoto in the 12 century and present day.

Nichibunken (International Research Center for Japanese Studies)
Most of the databases require registration (free), which you can renew automatically annually. There are photograph collections, map collections, and some amazing scrolls.
