Search by keywords

Google Patent Search enables full text searching of patents and applications from 1790 to present. Images display in PDF.

Search tips:

  • Enter keywords to find issued patents and applications.
  • View relevant individual patents to find the U.S. and international patent classifications related to your invention.
    • View the patent image (Google PDF or USPTO TIFF). Primary classifications are in bold font.
    • "Field of Search" indicates related classifications searched - these may also be relevant.
  • Keep track of relevant patents found and classifications searched in your research log.
  • To display search results as images, change the "View as" pull-down menu to "Thumbnails."
  • Search results default to "Sort by relevance." Change to "Sort by date..." to display newest or oldest first.
  • To search by patent number, inventor, U.S. classification, etc., use Advanced Patent Search.

The USPTO Patent Full-Text and Image Database allows keyword searching for patents issued since 1976 and published applications. Images require TIFF viewer.
